The agent of Manchester City target Kevin de Bruyne is "furious" after his client was lured into telling reporters he would definitely stay at Wolfsburg this season, reports Goal.

The Belgium midfielder has been heavily linked with a £50m move to the early Premier League pacesetters, whose manager Manuel Pellegrini confirmed last week he is looking to add a couple of faces to his squad.

However, speaking at a Sport Bild awards event in Hamburg on Monday night, De Bruyne appeared to pour cold water on the speculation by announcing he would remain at the Volkswagen Arena this season.

And the 24-year-old's agent, Patrick de Koster, has responded angrily to those comments, claiming De Bruyne was put in "an awkward position" by being told to repeat after the presenter when he is not yet fluent in German.

"I am furious by what has happened tonight. Kevin wanted to show respect by attending this event," De Koster told Sky Sports.

"No decision has been made on Kevin's future in this transfer window. We have yet to find out if Wolfsburg has reached any agreement with a club.

"Kevin remains a Wolfsburg player, and is focused on his job at the club. He also remains happy at Wolfsburg."

De Bruyne, who was sold to Wolfsburg by City's title rivals Chelsea 18 months ago, collected Sport Bild's Star of the Year award after scoring 10 goals and assisting a further 20 as Dieter Hecker's side finished second in the Bundesliga last season.
